I knew I wanted to be a dentist since I was in the fifth grade, like a long time. My mom worked for a dentist and I grew up in which is a small town north of here. The town had probably two dentists at the time, like the old stand-up dentists, you know, when they stood up, and my mom, she was his only girl. It was so different from how I practice with hygienists and assistants and I can see why she couldn't get everything done.
On the weekends, a lot of times she would have to go into the office and I would go along and she'd be pouring models, developing x-rays, sterilizing instruments and I got interested in it. When I was in high school, I had a job working for a more modern dentist and I would go in after school and work like 8:00 at night and I decided I liked it, so I went to dental school. I have my bachelor's from Penn State University in microbiology and I went to University of Pennsylvania and I then went to general practice.

We have a lot of family friends that are dentists, nobody in my family but a lot of friends who are dentists, and they really encouraged me growing up to look into it. The more that I looked into it, I found that it's a really nice blend of many different areas of life. There's a lot of art in dentistry, there's a lot of science, there's some business in dentistry. I liked being able to dabble in all of those things. I did my undergraduate degree at the University of Pittsburgh. After three years there, I was accepted to dental school also at the University of Pittsburgh. I did my dental training there, and then after that I did a two-year general practice residency at The Ohio State University.
Doing a general practice residency program definitely gave me a lot more experience than I had already received as a dental student in order to make me a competent dentist that could not only treat the patients with quality, but also be able to think about their futures and treat multiple patients at a time with an assistant or with an expanded function assistant. It gave me a lot of background into people's health. I worked in a hospital so I got a lot of experience with patients who are very medically compromised. I worked with a lot of special needs patients. I worked in an operating room.
All of those situations were a lot more intense and more complicated than being in a private practice in a typical operatory with a typical patient. Even though I do have some patients that are medically compromised, now when they come in the door I'm not intimidated by that at all; I've had a lot of experience.
