On a patient’s first visit to our practice, we are going to do a thorough evaluation of their medical history and their past dental history. We will usually start by taking their blood pressure and also take what necessary x-rays that we need. Some people bring or have their x-rays sent from their previous dentist, which is helpful.
Then we do a periodontal screening where we do six readings around each tooth to check for pockets. This is followed by an oral cancer exam using the VELscope, a device that screens for oral cancer. Then I [Dr Ann] will check each tooth and come up with a treatment plan and the hygienist will provide a cleaning for the patient.
